The fourth son of Kakkappan, Very Rev. Msgr. Joseph Panikulam, after his secondary education joined the Minor Seminary at Ernakulam in 1925. In 1930 he was selected by theArch. Bishop to continue his studies in Rome. Thus he joined Propaganda College in Rome. When he was a Bachelor of Divinity in Theology, he had the opportunity to study in the faculty of Missiology, He was the first student from India in this faculty. Br. Joseph was ordained as priest by His Eminence Cardinal Marksty Selvagiany at lattaran Basillica in Rome on 23rd December 1933. He got the rare opportunity to ce1ebrate the first Holy Mass in the Jubilee year at the St. Peter's Basillica the next day 24th December 1933. After visiting the Holy land and hol.y Shrines of lourdes, Turin, Paciva, etc. he returned to India in 1934.
He had been working as Vicar and Forane Vicar of various churches since 1936. During his parish work he has built a number of churches, School buildings and Chapels in different places. He was the Manager of about 20 schools including the General Nursing School at Angamaly.
In 1937 he had the occasion to visit the Philippines in connection with the 33rd International Eucharistic Congress as the Representative of Archdiocese, of Ernakulam. He is the founder of the Social Institute at Kalamassery and the "Women's Social Industrial Cooperative Society" at Shertally.
Rev. Msgr. Joseph Panikulam has worked as the Director of Mar Augustine Memorial .-Iospital at Edappally and Little FI.ower Hospital at AngamaJy. He is the Director who started the."Eye Section" in Little Flower hospital, Angamaly.
On 10th August 1976 His Holiness Pope Paul VI blessed him with the Papal dignity of the "Monsignor".
Very Rev. Msgr. Joseph Panikulam was one of the consultants of the Archdiocese, a member of 1he priests' senate, Pastoral Council and the Synodal Judge in the Curia. He was taking rest as the Chaplain of St. Joseph's Convent Neerpara and the Spiritual Adviser of the Deaf and Blind School, Assisi Mount, Neerpara. He expired on 11-8-93.
